The Episcopal Academy established The Bishop William White Society to recognize the generosity of all who name Episcopal as beneficiary of a will, retirement plan, life insurance policy, life income gift or other type of planned giving arrangement–gifts that will help maintain the quality of Episcopal's programs for future generations.
On October 6, 1785 the Society's namesake, the Rev. William White, Chaplain of the Continental Congress, signed the charter to establish the new academy of the Protestant Episcopal Church. The academy's original mission was to train young men in both the classical and practical tradition as well as to teach Anglican doctrine. In 1787, as 55 of the most notable men in the 13 states met in Independence Hall to write a new Constitution, the academy's trustees laid the cornerstone of a new school building two doors from Independence Hall.
Many members of The Bishop William White Society seek to ensure Episcopal's future by strengthening our endowment. Gifts may be designated for a specific purpose or left unrestricted to give Episcopal the flexibility to direct funds to areas of greatest need.
If you have included or plan to include Episcopal in your estate plans, please use this member profile form to let us know. We would like to thank you for your generosity by welcoming you to the Bishop William White Society.
As a member of the Society, you will be invited to the annual luncheon with the Head of School and you will be recognized in academy publications. If you prefer to support Episcopal anonymously, your membership will be kept confidential. Questions regarding membership may be directed to Patricia W. Porter, Director of Planned Giving.
Leading up to the Haverford/EA/Agnes Irwin Weekend in November, the BWW Society gathered for lunch in the Board Room overlooking the campus green, the perfect spot to have a birds-eye view of the bustling campus and students. Members had the opportunity to visit with each other and hear from our Head of School, Dr. T.J. Locke and members of his administrative team. T.J. proudly boasted about the learning that occurs within our classrooms and the initiation of JTerm, participation in the Global On-Line Academy and the focus on innovation in teaching. His stated goals are to preserve what we do well, while keeping an eye to the future world in which our students will be living. EA is blessed to have an incredibly dedicated and talented faculty and such an engaged and generous alumni base.

BWW Society members also heard from our new Director of College Guidance, Cyndy Crum, who came to EA from St. Louis. She presented a snapshot of what it is like to apply to college in 2014 and how the colleges are looking at a huge number of applications from all over the world. While it is more competitive than ever, Cyndy assured our guests that EA’s students fare well and stand out in the process.
